The band have triumphed in the hotly-contested category, which saw them up against Sam Fender and Florence + The Machine.

Stereophonics have won the Best Indie category at The Global Awards 2020 with Very.co.uk, which took place at London's Eventim Apollo Hammersmith tonight (Thursday 5 March).

Asked by Radio X’s Rich Wolfenden how it feels to win gong, drummer Jamie Morrison joked: "It’s heavy”. When Rich wondered if they still see themselves as "indie" all these years on, frontman Kelly Jones commented: “Not really. Just a rock ’n’ roll band.”

The band - comprising of frontman Kelly Jones, Richard Jones, Adam Zindani and Jamie Morrison - beat off stiff competition from Sam Fender, The 1975, Twenty One Pilots and Florence + The Machine.

Stereophonics were presented with the trophy by Radio X presenters Chris Moyles and Johnny Vaughan.

Accepting the award, Kelly Jones said: "Thank you very much. I don’t really know what I’m supposed to say after those f***ing two.

“Thank you to everybody and thank you to Radio X for your support.

“We’ve been here for 27 years, so thank you very much and have a good night.... and get p*ssed."

Kelly Jones and co also took home the Global Special Award in recognition of their remarkable career and their contribution to music and entertainment.

They then played out the awards ceremony with a selection of their hits, including C'est La Vie, Maybe Tomorrow and Dakota.
