Former England football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson died with debts of almost £4m, according to Swedish media.

Eriksson, who died aged 76 last August after suffering from pancreatic cancer, left assets worth £4.8m - but owed £8.4m, the reports say.

£7.25m of the debt was owed to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in the UK, according to the reports.

The Swede, who managed England's international team between 2001 and 2006, previously described himself as being "stupid" with his money.

In one of his last ever interviews, he told The Guardian: "I was never interested in money - I never took care of it and trusted people to do that for me. I was stupid not to control where the money went. I realised that when I didn't have any more cash!

"I still don't know what I have in the bank."

In 2013, Eriksson took his financial adviser Samir Khan to court, claiming he had been defrauded after Mr Khan lost him £10m in failed investments.

Mr Khan was later declared bankrupt, which put an end to Eriksson's claim for damages. He got an apology from the adviser in court, but no financial compensation.

Anders Runebjer, the lawyer for Eriksson's estate, was quoted by Swedish news agency Goteborgs-Posten as saying they were trying to sell the former football manager's assets, including a mansion in Varmland, Sweden, worth 25m krona (£1.83m).
