An academic paper on mosh pits has been published in the States.
It's called Collective Motion of Moshers at Heavy Metal Concerts - and has been put together by the Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics at Cornell University in New York.
It concludes that mosh pits mirror the 'kinetics of gaseous particles'.
A mosh pit is "a a disordered gas-like state" while a circle pit is "an ordered vortex-like state".
