Chad Smith took time out to speak to the Johnny Vaughan 4-7 Thang about everything from his favourite drummers to Red Hot Chili Peppers' new album.

Return of the Dream Canteen is the latest record to come from the California funk rockers and marked their second release in the same year.

Explaining their abundance of new music, the Tippa My Tongue rocker said: “It’s another 17-song album from the quarantine year 2021.

“You know, like everything else in the world, we were like - what is going on and how long is it going to go? So we just made all these songs and we wanted to put them all out because we loved them. "

The 60 year old rocker joked: "This is us, leaving our fans wanting less. Seriously though, seriously though we’re really pleased with it. It’s just got a lot of great songs."

The title of the song, brought Chad onto the subject of some of his favourite drummers, which of course included his dear friend and the late Foo Fighters' rocker Taylor Hawkins.

The rocker even took the time out to show Johnny one of the most prized possessions in his study, including and an extra special Taylor Hawkins cowbell, of which there are only 10 of.

Chad Smith featured in Radio X's fan poll, The Ringos, which asked listeners to choose their favourite drummer.

Reacting to the results - which saw Matt Helders at the top spot, followed by Hawkins in second, Bill Rudd and Reni in joint third place and Blink 182's Travis Barker in fourth and the RHCP drummer round off the Top 5 - he joked: "Who voted for this, except my family?!"
