DMA'S would be "into" a collab with "super cool" Melanie C after festival encounter

The Aussie trio have revealed they'd be happy to get in the studio with the former Spice Girl after meeting her at Neighbourhood Weekender earlier this year.

DMA'S would be open to working with Mel C in the studio.

The band - comprised of rhythm guitarist Johnny Took, lead guitarist Matt Mason and singer Tommy O'Dell - played Neighbourhood Weekender earlier this year, where Took took a photo with the singer and explained why he approached the former Spice Girl.

"She was super cool," the rhythm guitarist and songwriter told Radio X's Rich Wolfenden on The Evening Show. "I said to [Mason] Mace the other day I was like, man, I gotta get a photo with Mel C, you know. My sister was a massive Spice Girls fan. I love the Spice Girls."

He went to explain that when he approached the singer, she knew who the band were and mentioned the fact her partner Chris Dingwall - who she has since tied the knot with - is from Western Australia.

The Delete rocker continued: "I went up to her and I was like, I was like, 'Hey Mel, like, do you mind if I get a photo?' She's like, 'Yeah, of course, of course'. I was like, 'Yeah, I'm playing later today actually, so, um, yeah, I hope your set was good'. And she goes, "Yeah, DMA'S right?' I was like, that's cool."

He added: "She goes, 'My husband's from Western Sydney, so I'm, I'm out there quite a bit.' And she was super lovely, super cool, really nice."

Quizzed on whether they'd be open to getting a visit from Mel C and her bringing a bit of "girl power" into the studio, Took replied: "I'd be into it, man."

"We would talk," added Mason, while singer O'Dell concurred: "Sounds good to me, man".

This week has also seen the band release another taste from their forthcoming albu, with surprise new fan track Windows, which follows Killing Time, Hurracane, My Baby's Place and the album's stadium-ready, lead single Heatin Park.

DMA'S eponymous album was written and recorded between the band's own studio in Glebe, Sydney and Los Angeles and was co-produced for the most part with the GRAMMY nominated producer Lach Bostock (Mansionair), with help from Jimi Somewhere and Styalz Fuego.

Speaking about the record, which they "couldn't be more proud of" and the fact it's self-titled, they told Radio X: "You know, the songs we've released off this album, people have said it sounds like our older stuff. So it's sort of almost like a sort of a coming home kind of symbolic thing, you know. Also.... we just felt like it was a good time to do it."

The record - which follows Hills End (2016), For Now (2018), The Glow (2020) and How Many Dreams? (2023) - will be released on 21st August via Wonderlick Entertainment/Sony Music Australia/RCA UK and is available to preorder/presave here.

DMA’S will be available in several variants including streaming, digital download, cassette, CD and vinyl, including a signed, clear splatter special edition. A new range of merchandise has also been launched by the band, including their collab with Sydney FC, which you can find here.

To celebrate the release, DMA'S will play intimate record store shows in the UK this month, which will see them visit Kingston upon Thames, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol and more.

The band will return to the UK and Ireland to play some of their biggest headline shows to date next year, which include two Manchester Academy shows and stops at the Eventim Apollo, London and Liverpool Olympia.
