The band have been chosen for the honour ahead of the awards ceremony, which takes place on 17 February.
Coldplay have been announced as the recipients of the NME Godlike Genius Award.
The four-piece - who released their A Head Full Of Dreams album at the beginning of last December - have been honoured ahead of the awards ceremony, which takes place at the O2 Brixton Academy on 17 February 2016.
Speaking of their win, Chris Martin said: “We’re extremely grateful to the NME for giving us this award. It’s a huge honour and it means everything to us as Coldplay would be nothing without the NME. Appearing in the magazine for the first time in 1998 - in the smallest font - was the biggest thing that ever happened to us, and their love and support changed our world. Thank you so much NME.”
The Adventure Of A Lifetime band will collect the award on the night and celebrate by closing the show with an exclusive set of their greatest hits.
Previous Godlike Genius winners include The Clash, Paul Weller, The Cure, Noel Gallagher, Manic Street Preachers, Dave Grohl, Johnny Marr and U2.
Last year’s ceremony saw Suede take home the prestigious gong.
Tickets for the ceremony are on sale now.
