There was a surprise in store for a couple out for a Christmas Day walk in Melbourne.

They came across a one metre long freshwater crocodile on a footpath in the suburb of Heidelberg Heights.

The discovery baffled police officers, who could not work out where it had come from or who the owner was.

Acting Sergeant Daniel Elliott told local media: "We're running on the presumption that it was a pet at some stage, it's a long way from any bodies of water so we don't think it would be able to make its way there."

Unsure what to do, they called in a professional snake catcher, Mark Pelley, to look after the baby croc.

According to a Victoria Police statement the reptile will stay with Mr Pelley until the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning can collect it.
