The 50 Greatest Record Labels Of All Time
The first big artist-owned label, Apple was founded by The Beatles in 1968 with the release of Hey Jude/Revolution and The "White" Album, technically all Fabs records were actually issued on Parlophone. "Proper" Apple artists include Badfinger, James Taylor, Mary Hopkin, Billy Preston. The label wound up in 1976, but periodically comes out of retirement to carry any Beatles-related product.
