9. Joy Division - Closer
Following the huge critical success of their 1979 debut Unknown Pleasures, a high-profile UK support slot with the Buzzcocks and increasing popularity across Europe, it seemed like 1980 would be the year Manchester's Joy Division would hit the big time. On May 18, on the eve of a tour of America and mere weeks before the release of their second album, Closer, singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. The accompanying single, Love Will Tear Us Apart, would make the UK Top 20 soon after.
