The Liverpool trio will return in April 2015 with new album Glitterbug, their first release in four years.

The Wombats have used Instagram to unveil the cover art for their upcoming album Glitterbug, set to be released on 6 April 2015.

The band said they've had an "absolutely cracking time" recording the record, their first since 2011's This Modern Glitch.

The majority of tracks were inspired by a relationship that frontman Matthew 'Murph' Murphy imagined with a fictitious woman in LA.

"That became the main inspiration for most of the songs, this false world that I’d created for myself," he said.

"As time progressed, I’d go to L.A. more and more, and the idea kept on building. The album’s about the envy and the struggle and the pretence and the worry and the fear that L.A. – and every major city in the world – encompasses.”

The band go on tour to promote the album next year, with Glitterbug available on pre-order in January.
