The Kooks

The Kooks radiox session

The Kooks formed in Brighton in 2004, and the current line-up is Luke Pritchard (guitar and vocals), Hugh Harris (guitar), Peter Denton (bass) and Alexis Nunez (drums). They were signed to Virgin Records a mere three months after they got together and released their debut single, Eddie's Gun, in July of 2005.

But it was their fourth single, Naive, that made an impression: taken from their debut album Inside In/Inside Out, it made the UK Top 5 in April 2006. They followed this up with more hits: She Moves In Her Own Way and the plaintive Ooh La. Their faintly retro rock found a sizeable audience in the year that Arctic Monkeys gave British music a much-needed boost.

Original bassist Max Rafferty left in 2008, to be replaced by Peter Denton and at one point it looked touch and go whether The Kooks would continue… but a second album, Konk, was released in April 2008, topping the UK album chart. It featured the singles Sway and Always Where I Need To Be.

A third album, Junk Of The Heart, followed in September 2011, with drummer Paul Garred being replaced by Alexis Nunez. Their fourth album, Listen, was released in September 2014 and signalled a new, experimental sound for the band with an element of funk and gospel included on the single Down.
